SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a common condition of the skin. It is a red scaly rash that usually occurs on areas of the skin with abundant oil glands. This includes the scalp, eyebrows, nose, ears, and the middle of the chest. Less commonly, it can be seen under the arms and breasts, and even in the groin.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

The cause of Seborrheic Dermatitis is not known. A yeast-like organism that lives in the oily skin may play a role.Doctors think it may be due to a combination hormone levels, weakened immune system, lack of certain nutrients, or nervous system problems. Irritation from a yeast called Malassezia may also lead to this condition. Seborrheic dermatitis appears to run in families according to our Spring Hill, Florida dermatology friends at PHDermatology.

HOW DO I TREAT IT?

There is no cure for Seborrheic Dermatitis; however, there are several ways to keep it under control.

  • Medicated shampoos can be prescribed.
  • A mild cortisone cream may be prescribed.
  • Regular bathing with gentle removal of scales may be beneficial. It is okay to wash hair every day.
